Painted buntings migrate from the Caribbean and Central America arriving early to mid April and departing mid to late October to return to a warmer climate.
Blue Heron Inn makes for a great birding location. Centrally located along the Colonial Coast Migratory route with both fresh water ponds and salt marsh attract a wide variety of species as they rest or nest throughout the grounds of the inn and surrounding area.
Best time for birding? All year. If you want to see the painted buntings mid April-September is the best time. Photographers may want to concentrate their time between mid April through June to catch male and femael painted buntings looking their best.
Below are two birding itineraries. One for the local Darien/McIntosh County area and another that covers the Georgia coast. Blue Heron Inn is centrally located making any location along the coast an easy day trip.
