The Darien River House Restaurant & Wine Bar, a restored 1867 Victorian house, is nestled under the mossy maritime oaks of the Darien River Bluff. Take advantage of ample parking or dock your boat to one of two public docks located within 2000 feet of our front door. Coming through our doors, you will be treated to true southern hospitality, fine food & wine and the warm feeling that you’re dining in a friend's beautifully restored Victorian home.

Where the Low Country Meets the Bayou. Low country cuisine at its best AND a Creole menu. Chef Ray is from Baton Rouge. This is where the locals eat. Looks like a hole in the wall, service can be slow when busy. It ain't fancy but sure is good. No website, no email......just good food.

Waterfront Wine Bar is located directly behind Waterfront Wine & Gourmet, with a beautiful view of the Darien River. Enter through the Wine Store, then sit down and enjoy a beer, a glass of wine, along with an Hors d' Oeuvre or Desert while you watch the boats go by and the sun set over the river. Friday and Saturday nights we usually have live music from 6:00-10:00 PM.

Visit Vicki's retail store in beautiful historic downtown Darien. Olive Affairs manufactures "Flavor of Georgia" Award Winning Gourmet Tapenades. The retail store offers olive oils, vinegars, along with the Tapenade and Authentic Muffaletta Sandwiches. Call ahead to order a hot sandwich or stop by the sidewalk cafe for a sandwich and bottle of ginger beer. Home-made soups, brownies and bread are also available for eat-in or take-home.

Tickets for public and group tours of Sapelo Island can be purchased at the Visitor Center. T-shirts, books, and videos are also available for purchase.

Harris Neck's 2,762 acres consists of saltwater marsh, grassland, mixed deciduous woods, and cropland. Because of this great variety in habitat, many different species of birds are attracted to the refuge throughout the year. In the summer, thousands of egrets and herons nest in the swamps, while in the winter, large concentrations of ducks (especially mallards, gadwall and teal) gather in the marshland and freshwater pools. Over 15 miles of paved roads and trails provide the visitor easy access to the many different habitats. Chosen for it's accessibility and bird diversity, Harris Neck is one of 18 sites forming the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, inaugurated in 2000.

Beaches stretching as far as the eye can see define the Sapelo experience. The Atlantic surf constantly changes and redesigns the undeveloped shoreline, and the salt marshes around Sapelo's undisturbed sand dunes represent a unique ecosystem found only along the barrier islands. Hog Hammock is a small Geechee/Gullah community of about 45 people on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Geechee/Gullah refers to distinct African-American culture that developed primarily along the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia. The culture is called "Gullah" in South Carolina, and "Geechee" in Georgia. Sapelo’s Hog Hammock community is made up of the decedents of slaves who worked the plantation of Thomas Spalding. Spalding first brought slaves to the island in 1802, primarily from West Africa, Sierra Leone and bordering countries, for the Africans ability to cultivate rice and their resistance to malaria. Rice, cotton, indigo, and sugarcane were produced on the Spalding plantation. Left isolated, the Geechee/Gullah developed a distinct culture and language, a Creole based upon English and several African dialects. They have retained more of their African cultural roots than their African-American counterparts who have been interspersed through society.The human history of Sapelo dates back about 4,500 years. Archaeological investigations on the island have determined an extensive Native American presence on Sapelo during the Archaic Period of pre-history (2,000-500 B.C.).

This is the oldest English fort remaining on Georgia's coast. From 1721 until 1736, Fort King George was the southern outpost of the British Empire in North America. Structures include a blockhouse, officers' quarters, barracks, a guardhouse, moat and palisades. A museum and film cover the Guale Indians, the Santo Domingo de Talaje mission, Fort King George, the Scots of Darien and 19th century sawmilling when Darien became a major seaport. In addition to the many fort buildings, remains of three sawmills and tabby ruins are still visible. This site is on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail.

Walking tour begins in downtown Darien.The town of Darien (originally known as New Inverness) was founded in January 1736 by Scottish Highlanders recruited by James Oglethorpe to act as settler-soldiers protecting the frontiers of Georgia from the Spanish in Florida, the French in the Alabama basin and their Indian allies. On January 10, 1736, 177 emigrants, including women and children, arrived on board the Prince of Wales to establish Darien.

This beautiful plantation represents the history and culture of Georgia’s rice coast. In the early 1800s, William Brailsford of Charleston carved a rice plantation from marshes along the Altamaha River. The plantation and its inhabitants were part of the genteel low country society that developed during the antebellum period. While many factors made rice cultivation increasingly difficult in the years after the Civil War, the family continued to grow rice until 1913.
